Investment Casting Tooling

Precision Tooling for
Lost Wax Casting

RP Technologies designs and manufactures precision tooling for investment casting patterns, supporting foundries, OEMs, engineers and product designers with high-quality tooling for lost wax casting.

Our tooling is designed to support reliable wax injection, clean pattern production and repeatable results across development and production programmes. We design, manufacture and inspect investment casting tooling in-house, working from customer drawings, CAD data and casting requirements.

    What is Investment Casting?

Investment casting tooling is used to produce the wax pattern which is used in the lost wax casting process.

Wax is injected into a tool to create an accurate pattern of the final component. The pattern is coated in ceramic, which is then heated, hardening the shell and melting out the wax. Molten metal is cast into the resulting void, and once cool, the ceramic shell is broken away to reveal the final part.

Because the wax pattern directly defines the shape and detail of the final casting, the quality of the tooling is critical. Producing a consistent, accurate pattern demands careful consideration of part geometry, wax flow, shrinkage, ejection and surface detail.

    Typical Applications

Investment casting tooling is used across sectors where complex metal components need to be produced accurately and repeatably. Typical applications include:

    • Aerospace: Turbine blades, nozzle guide vanes, impellers, structural brackets
    • Automotive: Turbocharger housings, exhaust manifolds, gear selector forks
    • Medical: Surgical instruments, orthopaedic implants, dental prosthetics
    • Defence: Firearm components, missile hardware, helicopter transmission components
    • Rail: Brake components, valve bodies
    • Industrial: Pump & valve bodies, impellers, compressor components.

    Capabilities

We design and manufacture investment casting tooling in-house, working from customer drawings, CAD data and casting specifications. Our tooling is developed with a clear understanding of the full lost wax process, from wax injection through to metal casting.

Parting lines, ejection, wax flow and shrinkage allowances are all considered at the design stage. We also factor in the requirements of pattern assembly, including how individual patterns will be gated onto the sprue tree for multi-component casting runs. Where appropriate, we can design and manufacture multi-cavity tooling to support higher volume pattern production.

Before a tool is approved, key features are checked against customer drawings, CAD data and project requirements to confirm that critical dimensions and details have been achieved. This supports tight tolerance work and helps identify any issues before tooling is released for wax injection.

We support both prototype and production tooling requirements, with design, manufacturing and inspection carried out at our West Midlands facility.

    Why Choose RP Technologies?

Investment casting tooling sits at the start of a long process chain and errors at the tooling stage have a way of showing up much later, at significant cost. RP Technologies brings decades of precision toolmaking experience to this work, combined with a genuine understanding of what the downstream casting process demands.

We can design, machine and adapt all tooling in-house. That single-source approach gives customers a consistent point of contact and clear accountability from initial design through to finished tool.

Whether the requirement is for prototype tooling, production tooling or modification of an existing tool, we have the experience and capability to support it.
